“Want to make your visual content more engaging to your consumers? Focus on being useful”
Who agrees with me that social media is God’s gift to businesses. Especially small businesses and homegrown businesses? It has become one of the best business tools as it offers a free platform for advertising, engagement and community building. It has literally opened doors and direct communication lines between businesses and customers. And like we all know, this is what sells. The engagement, exposure, and human influence.
Of all the social media channels, Instagram seems to be more visually oriented hence the reason why it’s a favourite amongst business owners. It gives them an opportunity to create a visual voice. Of all its features, Instagram stories are mostly used because it’s sort of a hall pass. With everyone curating a well planned and cohesive feed, who doesn’t want a space to just post on the go. And the best part? It lasts just 24 hours although there’s an option to highlight it. Oh well, you get the drift.
Now let’s get down to business. I’ll be sharing top Instagram stories take over tips with you. But first, let me explain what an Instagram story take over is. This is when brands hand over the control of their Instagram stories to a customer, influencer, creative or even another brand for the purpose of engaging with the audience, creating a new kind of content and simply just taking the fans on a different journey.
All this talk, now who made me an expert? Recently, I did my second Instagram stories take over for Wilson’s Lemonade and I did a pretty good job if I do say so myself. I got a lot of questions on my top Instagram stories takeover tips. Well, to be very honest, I didn’t do any research prior to the takeover. I did what I would have loved to see if I were just a viewer. I basically just told stories, after all, I’m a storyteller.
I see Instagram stories take over being a big deal soon so I’m so excited to share my top Instagram stories take over tips with you. I’ll group these tips into three sections for easy understanding. Pre Take Over, During Take Over and Post Take Over.
Pre Take Over
Know The Brand
Does the brand align with your goals or niche? Do you understand their message and voice? What do they stand for? These are questions that need to be answered before any take over as they will guide the type of content and strategy. Remember, in as much as it is your face, it’s not about you, it’s about the brand.
Create A Content Strategy
Let’s get this clear, everyone watching a takeover wants to see something different from the usual stories they see on your page. They might as well just watch your own Insta story if they want to see the same old content. This is why you need to create a strategy. What do you want to do? Show them your day? Teach them? Create engagement or what? Ensure it is clearly drafted out.
Promote Your Take Over
Leaving the promoting to the brand alone puts you in a bad light. Every brand wants to work with someone who is just as interested in their project as they are. Let all your followers know what is about to happen, tell them what to expect so everyone is on board and excited to see how it unfolds. In my opinion, this is a more professional and organized approach.
During The Take Over
Tell a Story
Like I always say, content is king but storytelling is the emperor. Using the storytelling approach takes the viewers on a journey and leaves them glued to their phones. Everyone wants to see what’s coming next so create that anticipation. The best way to do this is to create an order. Imagine the story is a journey where you need to take everyone from point A to point B. I think this is important. The worst takeovers are those that leave everyone confused and I’m pretty sure you don’t want to fall into that category.
Focus On The Brand
This is not an opportunity to start dropping your Instagram handle on every story. Don’t make it about yourself and go off point. I watch a lot of takeovers and I can’t help but cringe. Whatever content being created should focus on the brand’s strong point. In my take over with Wilson’s Lemonade, all my contents were in line with their value. For instance, I went hiking and took some lemonades along. Rather than just show the breathtaking mountains, I incorporated Wilson’s lemonade into all my pictures. Basically, what I wanted to do was show the Wilsons lifestyle.
Be Engaging As Much As Possible
Whether your teaching, sharing a recipe or just about anything; make it engaging. In one of my old posts where I tried to teach better content creation, I mentioned the gamifying process. Create ways they can ask questions, comment and participate. You can check out my post on how to build a successful online campaign.
Create A Unique Experience
Like I mentioned earlier, a takeover is not where you do the same old things you do on your own stories. Make it as unique as possible. Stand out from the crowd, you don’t have to do what everyone is doing. Create unique content with the brand’s products or services and simply just entertain your viewers.
Post Take Over
End With A Bang
Always end with a call to action. Guide the viewers to the next step. Want them to visit a page, open a link, buy an item? State it at the end.
Yes! Insta stories last 24 hours don’t stop promoting until it disappears. The brands can see the numbers as well so you want to show them how good an influencer you are.
- Plan the takeover days earlier.
- Create all necessary visuals before the takeover. You can never tell how your day will go.
- Create some sort of buzz days before the takeover jus to get your followers excited.
- Tell the followers the plan for the day. This way, they know what to expect.
- Don’t over think this! Just create.
- Less Videos, more pictures. The cost of internet in Nigeria is not exactly cheap.
- Canva is amazing and has a lot of Insta story templates. Utilize the free gifts of the internet.
